Irving Rodriguez-Barraza, 22, ID’d as Suspect in Fatal DUI Crash
KERN COUNTY, CA (July 25, 2022) – Authorities detained Irving Rodriguez-Barraza after a fatal DUI crash near Buttonwillow and Shafter.
The California Highway Patrol determined that the 22-year-old Wasco man was under the influence of alcohol when the collision occurred on Saturday.
The incident began when Irving Rodriguez-Barraza was driving a Dodge Ram east on Burbank Street, approaching Shafter Avenue. At the same time, a Jeep Cherokee was going north on Shafter.
He then ran a stop sign at the intersection. In the process, his pickup hit the left side of the Jeep which was forced into an almond orchard.
The Cherokee struck two power poles and an almond tree, rolled and landed on its left side. The Dodge truck slammed into a stop sign in the area.
1 Killed, 4 Injured in Wreck
The Kern Golden Empire and Bakersfield Now wrote that the wreck took place on July 23 at around 4:30 p.m. CHP said four Bakersfield residents were riding the Jeep when the accident happened.
The 29-year-old driver, Jesus Tejada Sanchez, and his passengers, Joanne Figueroa, 34, and two children sustained moderate to major injuries. The juveniles were a 1-year-old girl and a 6-year-old.
Irving Rodriguez-Barraza and his passenger, 48-year-old Cruz Carrillo Olvera, survived the crash with moderate or major injuries.
Paramedics rushed all six patients to the Kern Medical, where the 1-year-old died. Meanwhile, officers soon arrested Irving Rodriguez-Barraza on suspicion of DUI.
The DUI crash is still under investigation
