Issac Meza, Carmen Esqueda Injured in Hit-and-run Crash in Bakersfield

Suspect Sought in Hit-and-run Pedestrian Collision on Baker Street

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (August 31, 2023) — Issac Meza and Carmen Esqueda were both critically injured in a hit-and-run crash on Baker Street, near East Truxtun Avenue in Bakersfield.

The collision occurred around 12:09 a.m. on August 27, according to Bakersfield Now.

Police officers responded to the 600 block of Baker Street and located a man and woman suffering major injuries in the roadway.

They were both rushed by ambulance to a hospital where they are being treated for major injuries. The man, however, was gravely injured. The woman was being treated for fractures to her arm, neck and spine from the crash.

Surveillance footage from a Kwik Serv across the street captured the collision on video.

The couple was walking out of the El Montecito Club and were waiting to cross the street. Meanwhile, a white SUV drive by them before they entered the roadway. Next, the SUV reversed backwards and ran over the couple in the roadway.

Police are now searching for the suspect’s white four-door SUV. It was last seen traveling northbound on Baker Street, police said.

Witnesses are asked to contact the Bakersfield Police Department at (661) 327-7111. The family of Carmen Esqueda created a GoFundMe to help pay her medical costs.
