Fatal 6-Vehicle Collision on Interstate 680 Freeway
FREMONT, Calif. (July 18, 2024) — A semi-truck jackknifed and collided with five other vehicles in a fatal Fremont crash Thursday morning on the Interstate 680 Freeway, just south of the Auto Mall Parkway.
The multi-vehicle collision occurred on the southbound I-680, north of Mission Boulevard at around 7:04 a.m. on July 18th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The semi-truck hauling roughly 10,000 pounds of beef collided with other vehicles and went off the roadway roughly 20 feet, the report said. The big rig went “straight down an embankment and the cab was turned facing the truck trailer at a 90-degree angle,” the report said.
The other vehicles involved included a Ford F-250 pickup truck, a white Toyota Venza SUV, a Honda Pilot SUV, and possibly two sedans. The Ford pickup had a broken front axle, the Venza was facing the wrong way in traffic lanes, and the Honda had all-around damage and was sideways in the No. 5 lane.
Paramedics responded and located one person unconscious in a white Toyota, but there are no further details at this time.
However, the report stated one person died in the crash and authorities requested the Alameda County Sheriff-Coroner respond.
Police issued a SigAlert and called for multiple tow trucks to remove the damaged vehicles and seim-truck.
Finally, the case remains under investigation to determine fault for the fatal truck crash on the 680 Freeway.
