Police Arrest Suspect in Fatal Hit-and-run Crash Near Griffith Park
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (April 19, 2022) – Police arrested Jairo Martinez, 37, on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter following a hit-and-run crash that killed a bicyclist near Griffith Park.
The suspect is being held on $616,000 bail, police said.
Andrew Jelmert, 77, died in the hit-and-run crash Saturday afternoon on Crystal Springs Drive. He was participating in a Griffith Park charity bike ride at the time the motorist allegedly struck him at 3:49 p.m. on April 16th. .
The suspect reportedly ran away from the crash scene on foot, but was later arrested by park rangers, according to the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Traffic Division.
The cyclist was participating in AIDS/LifeCycle’s SoCal Day on the Ride. He was traveling north on Crystal Springs Drive when a car heading in the same direction hit him from behind. The man fell off the bike into the roadway and died at the scene.
It was the fifth time Andrew Jelmert participated in the 67-mile ride that started at 7 a.m. with a mandatory safety speech and ended . He was a member of the team Different Spokes, according to event organizers.
Investigators are working on the case and will determine if drugs and or alcohol were factors.
The investigation is ongoing.
