James Barnes, 57, Killed Child Pedestrian in Long Beach Crash
LONG BEACH, CA (July 29, 2022) – Authorities detained James Barnes after a crash that killed a child pedestrian in Long Beach.
Police identified the 57-year-old Desert Hot Springs man as the driver in the fatal collision which took place on Tuesday.
The incident happened when James Barnes was driving a Dodge Ram west on 23rd Street, approaching Lakewood Boulevard, in the city.
At the same time, a 7-year-old boy and his father were crossing eastbound Lakewood at 23rd. Long Beach police said the suspect tried to make a left turn onto southbound Lakewood.

In the process, he failed to yield to the victims. He then struck the child in the marked south crosswalk with the right-of-way pedestrian signal on.
The KTLA News and NBC Los Angeles wrote that the accident occurred on July 26 shortly before 5:30 p.m. Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived and pronounced the boy dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, Long Beach police affirmed that James Barnes stopped and stayed at the site after hitting the victim. They soon arrested him on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.
Officers forced Lakewood Boulevard to shut down between Stearns and Willow streets for a time following the incident. The cause of the Long Beach crash is still under investigation.
