Suspected Hit-and-run, DUI Driver Julio Santamaria, 55, Arrested
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (July 16, 2018) – James Haley died was struck and killed by a suspected DUI driver who fled the scene after the collision on Firestone boulevard at Holmes Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal hit-and-run crash took place about 2 a.m. in the unincorporated Firestone Park community.
Police later arrested a suspect nearby and identified him as Julio Santamaria, 55, of Los Angeles.
The injured man was transported by ambulance to Saint Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, but later died of his injuries at 2:46 a.m., police said.
Santamaria was reportedly driving a 2017 Dodge Charger. The vehicle was found parked near 87th and Bandera streets with damage to the windshield and hood. The evidence on the vehicle was consistent with having struck a pedestrian, police said.
After conducting a search in the area where the vehicle was parked, police located Santamaria walking on the sidewalk near 87th Street and Fir Avenue. Upon further investigation, police determined he had been driving the Dodge and was intoxicated. He was arrested and booked at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Inmate Reception Center.
Traffic Accident Investigation
At this time, it appears that the driver who fled the scene is going to be held responsible for the death of the pedestrian.
