Fallen Tree Causes Multi-Vehicle Collision on Highway 101
Gilroy, CA (December 13, 2022) – 50-year-old Jason Manning, and 28-year-old Ezequiel Sanchez both died following a traffic accident that occurred on Highway 101 early Sunday.
According to Santa Cruz Sentinel, a large eucalyptus tree fell on top of a Toyota traveling in the right-most lane of southbound SR-101. Earlier reports indicated the Toyota ended up pinned underneath the tree.
Officials said two other passing vehicles were unable to stop immediately and slammed into the large eucalyptus blocking both lanes of the highway. The force from the impact resulted in significant damages to both the GMC and BMW.
2 Killed, 3 Injured in Gilroy Car Crash
Shortly after 3:30 a.m., rescue teams arrived at the crash site. Responding paramedics rendered aid to all parties involved in the wreck. After the assessment, medical personnel sadly pronounced the driver of the GMC and the front passenger in the BMW both dead. The California Highway Patrol later identified the fatal victims as Jason Manning from San Tan Valley, Arizona; and Ezequiel Sanchez from Gonzales, respectively.
Authorities added three other individuals were transported to hospitals after the incident for treatment of major injuries. Personal information on the injured parties remained undisclosed pending confirmation.
The article published online mentioned police shut down Highway 101 for approximately four hours to give way to the clearing operations, and investigation process. Detectives handling the case continue to work to determine liability in the deadly accident that happened in Gilroy.
