Jason Munoz-Cruz Killed in Bakersfield Crash at Union and California Avenues

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (June 13, 2025) — Jason Munoz-Cruz, 27, of Porterville, died in a crash at Union Avenue and East California Avenue in southeast Bakersfield.
The fiery two-vehicle crash at 11:30 p.m. on June 10th involved speed and alcohol, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.
Investigators working on the case reported a white BMW driven by Nathon Michael Ramirez, 19, was heading northbound on Union Avenue when its driver allegedly ran a red light. The car slammed into a westbound Dodge Charger traveling on East California Avenue. Surveillance and witness video captured the moment the BMW erupted in flames following the impact.

The innocent driver of the Dodge Charger sustained major injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. Jason Munoz-Cruz was later identified by the Kern County Coroner’s Office.
Meanwhile, the BMW’s driver was also hospitalized with moderate injuries. A passenger in that vehicle suffered critical injuries and remains in unstable condition, police said.
Authorities believe both speed and alcohol played roles in the crash. The intersection was shut down for several hours overnight as traffic investigators processed the scene.
The investigation remains active and no arrests have been made at this time.
