Bicycle Rider Killed in Crash ID”d as Jason Wilcox
EL CAJON, Calif. (July 19, 2018) — Jason Wilcox, 40, was struck and killed Monday night by a driver at 2nd Street and Pepper Street in El Cajon, according to the San Diego Medical Examiner.
The collision was reported about 10:28 p.m. on July 16th. The bicycle rider, described as a local transient, was riding through the intersection at the same time as a driver in a pickup truck. The driver was reportedly driving at a high rate of speed, but it’s unknown if it was above the posted 45 mph speed limit. The vehicle struck Wilcox and he was thrown off his bike and killed. The coroner report stated he was not wearing a helmet, but it’s unknown if that would have saved his life.
The driver pulled over and called 911 for help, but despite aggressive CPR efforts, the man died of his injuries at the scene.
Traffic Accident Investigation
At this time, we do not know what caused this collision, nor who is responsible for this person’s death. Police are looking into whether or speed was a factor and who had the right-of-way at the intersection. Many questions remain such as whether either person was distracted or if drugs and or alcohol were factors.
We extend our prayers and condolences to the family of Mr. Wilcos at this difficult time.
