Jawed Ahmad Naweed, 36, Suspect in Temecula Fatal DUI Hit-and-Run Crash

TEMECULA, CA (August 20, 2021) – Authorities detained Jawed Naweed after a DUI hit-and-run crash on the 15 Freeway in Temecula.

The California Highway Patrol determined that the 36-year-old Menifee man was under the influence of alcohol on Thursday night.

The incident began when Jawed Ahmad Naweed was driving a 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 at a high rate of speed on the Rancho California Road on-ramp in Temecula.

He then failed to negotiate a curve, careened over the edge of the ramp and entered the northbound lanes of the 15 Freeway. At the same time, a 2016 Lexus sedan was traveling in the No. 2 lane.

CHP said the sports car drifted across lanes and went directly in front of the Lexus. In the process, the Lexus collided with the Mercedes and slammed into the concrete center divider wall.

Jawed Naweed continued and spun out of control across the freeway. A 2013 GMC Acadia approached and ultimately struck the rear of the Mercedes.

1 Killed, 2 Badly Injured in 15 Freeway Crash

Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived at the scene and extricated three trapped occupants of the Lexus from the wreckage. One passenger, an 80-year-old Gardena woman, died as a result of the wreck.

The other two patients, a 73-year-old Gardena man and a 76-year-old Gardena woman, sustained moderate injuries.

Medical personnel rushed them to the Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar for treatment. The names of the deceased and wounded victim have not been yet released.

Meanwhile, CHP affirmed that Jawed Naweed abandoned his car following the crash and jumped into a SUV. He fled the area but later returned and surrendered to officers.

Authorities arrested Jawed Naweed on suspicion of DUI resulting in great bodily injury, hit-and-run causing great bodily injury or death and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

They soon took him into the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta in lieu of a $75,000 bail. The Temecula DUI hit-and-run crash is still under investigation.

The Daily Bulletin and My News LA wrote that the collision took place on August 19 at about 9:50 p.m. Anyone with information can call the CHP’s Temecula station at 951-506-2000.
