Man, 20, Killed in Redding Crash on 5 Freeway Near Highway 299
REDDING (February 14, 2020) – An alleged DUI crash killed a man and seriously injured another along the Interstate 5 Freeway early Friday.
According to reports by Record Searchlight and KRCRTV News, the fatal accident took place shortly after 1 a.m. near the Lake Boulevard/Highway 299 interchange.
California Highway Patrol said a 2013 Honda Civic was traveling southbound on the 5 Freeway when it rear-ended a 2006 BMW sedan.
The BMW rolled over upon impact and ended on its roof. Officers added that a Peter-built tractor-trailer truck was unable to stop to avoid the collision and subsequently slammed into the overturned sedan.
Suspected DUI Driver Jecenia Hedrick, 22, Arrested
Paramedics responded to the site and pronounced the 20-year-old man driving the BMW dead at the scene. His name has not been yet released pending notification of next of kin.
Medical personnel also took the female driver and male passenger of the Honda to the hospital with major injuries. Officers identified the as Jecenia Hedrick, 22; and James Parscal, 20.
Police determined that Hedrick, of Anderson, was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs when the wreck occurred. They arrested her for DUI and faces felony charges including manslaughter.
Meanwhile the operator of the big rig, 56-year-old Timothy McDaniel, of Medford, Oregon, was unharmed in the incident. The tragic collision remains under investigation.
