Jeremiah Smeby, 49; and Diana Zuniga, 18, Killed in Martinez Crash on Highway 4

MARTINEZ, CA (May 14, 2023) – Jeremiah Smeby and Diana Zuniga were killed after a car crash on Highway 4 in Martinez.

The California Highway Patrol identified the 49-year-old Antioch man and the 18-year-old San Pablo woman as drivers involved in the Wednesday collision.

The incident happened when Jeremiah Smeby was driving a white Toyota Corolla while Diana Zuniga was driving a gray Honda Civic on westbound Highway 4 in Martinez.

2 Cars Collide

For an unknown reason, the Honda collided with the Toyota. The East Bay Times and CBS San Francisco wrote that the wreck took place on May 12 at about 10:40 p.m.

Both cars went off the roadway and plunged down an embankment. The vehicles then slammed into separate trees east of Center Avenue.

Jeremiah Smeby died at the hospital and Diana Zuniga died at the scene of the crash. Meanwhile, CHP forced the westbound lanes of Highway 4 to shut down for hours following the wreck.

The cause of the fatal Martinez crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information can call the CHP’s Contra Costa-area office at (925) 646-4980.
