Jermaine Walton, 31, ID’d as Suspect in Sacramento Fatal DUI Wrong-Way Crash
SACRAMENTO, CA (January 21, 2022) – Authorities detained Jermaine Walton after a fatal DUI wrong-way crash on Highway 99 in Sacramento.
The California Highway Patrol determined that the 31-year-old Sacramento man was under the influence of alcohol when he killed a police officer.
The incident began when Jermaine J. Walton was driving a 2016 Dodge Challenger north in the southbound lanes of Highway 99 near 47th Avenue in Sacramento.
At the same time, Elk Grove Police Officer Tyler Lenehan was riding a motorcycle south. CHP said the wrong-way driver then hit the motorcyclist head-on near 12th Avenue.
Officer Jermain Walton Killed in Wreck
The six-year veteran ended up ejected from his bike as a result of the collision. The Sacramento Bee and CBS Sacramento wrote that the wreck took place on Friday at around 5:13 a.m.
Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived and found the officer who sustained severe injuries following the accident. They rushed him to the UC Davis Medical Center, where he died.
Meanwhile, CHP located and stopped the suspect from walking away from the scene. They soon arrested Jermaine Walton on felony charges of murder and DUI.
Officials booked him into the Sacramento County Main Jail on wrong-way driving, and causing an accident resulting in injury, both felonies.
Records showed that the Jermaine Walton was still on probation for a 2017 DUI charge when the collision occurred. The Sacramento DUI crash is still under investigation.
