Alleged Drunken Driver in Custody in Death of Man in Wheelchair
LONG BEACH, Calif. (March 29, 2019) – Jesus Jorge Arias, 37, of Lakewood, was arrested following a suspected drunken driving crash that killed a 29-year-old man in a wheelchair who was attempting to cross Bellflower Boulevard in a crosswalk.
UPDATE: Kyle McNeley has been identified as the pedestrian in a wheelchair who was killed.
The suspect reportedly fled the crash of the crash Thursday night, but later turned returned to the scene and admitted what happened.
Arias was promptly arrested on charges of DUI and hit-and-run, the Long Beach Police Department reported. He is being held on $100,000 bail.
The Long Beach Police Department is heading up the investigation.
Police say the man in the wheelchair was struck by the suspect’s northbound 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The victim was found lying in the roadway about 8:05 p.m., suffering from major injuries on the northbound side of Bellflower Boulevard, just north of Harvey Way. The man was transported by ambulance to a hospital where he later died of his injuries.
