Passenger Killed in 2-Vehicle Crash on State Route 33
GUSTINE, Calif. (April 28, 2020) – Jesus Hernandez, 25, of San Jose, died last Tuesday in a two-vehicle crash on State Route 33 (Highway 33) in Gustine.
The collision was reported about 4:30 p.m. on April 21st at Sullivan Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Hernandez was riding as a passenger in an 1996 Acura driven by Lisa Chavez, 23, of San Jose, that collided with a 2017 Nissan driven by Luis Cruz, 25, of Santa Nella.
The Acura was reportedly headed north on Highway 33 when it attempted to make a left-hand turn in front of the Nissan. The two vehicles collided and the impact left Hernandez with major injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene after the crash. The Merced County Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as Jesus Hernandez.
Meanwhile, Cruz suffered minor injuries and Chavez complained of pain so he was taken to Los Banos Memorial Hospital.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash, but they do not suspect drugs or alcohol were factors.
