2 Dead, 9 Injured in Cholame Crash
CHOLAME, Calif. (April 9, 2018) — Jesus Ontiveros, 45, of Tulare was killed and his passengers Jose Luis Hernandez, 43, Manuel Hernandez, 50, Santiago Rodriguez, 57, Martin Hernandez, 39, were critically injured in a head-on collision involving multiple vehicles on state Route 46 at the Y intersection, according to news reports.
The fatal crash, which took place about 5 p.m. on Friday, April 6, left two people dead and nine seriously injured.
Four motorists were involved in the collision that also killed Catherine Ann Fox, 60, of Paso Robles. Fox was reportedly traveling eastbound in her 2012 Chevrolet Cruze on state Route 46 when for unknown reasons she swerved into the westbound traffic lane. She sideswiped a 2011 Nissan and caused that vehicle’s driver to lose control. Her vehicle continued in a north-east direction and crashed head-on into Ontiveros’ 2007 Toyota Minivan carrying four passengers.
Ontiveros died as a result of the collision. however, his passengers survived with major injuries. Hernandez, 43 of Tulare, suffered very major injuries and was life-flighted to Fresno Community Hospital. The other three passengers in the Nissan were all transported to Sierra Vista Hospital for treatment of major injuries.
Moises Hernandez and Jhona Caranza Hospitalized
Others hurt in the collision were identified as Moises Hernandez, 28, of Avenal. He was driving the Chevrolet Cruze and also suffered major injuries and was also taken to Sierra Vista Hospital. His passenger, Jhona Caranza, 27 of Avenal, was treated for minor injuries.
Following the collision with Fox, Hernandez’s Nissan skidded out of control and crashed directly into the path of a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Paul Cardenassoto, 39 of Salinas. Cardenassoto did not report any injuries at the time of the incident.
Victor M. Fernandez and Fermin Hernandez
Passengers who were in the Chevrolet Cruze with Hernandez were Victor M. Fernandez, 28, of Tulare and Fermin Hernandez, 30, of Kettleman City. The pair both suffered moderate injuries and were taken to separate hospitals. Fernandez was transported to Sierra Vista and Fermin Hernandez was sent to Twin Cities Community Hospital.
The crash remains under investigation with police to determine fault.
