Jesus Tejada Sanchez, 29; and Joanne Figueroa, 34, Seriously Injured in Fatal Crash
KERN COUNTY, CA (July 25, 2022) – A fatal DUI crash seriously injured Jesus Tejada Sanchez and Joanne Figueroa near Buttonwillow and Shafter.
The California Highway Patrol identified the Bakersfield residents as the victims of the wreck which took place on Saturday.
The incident happened when Jesus Tejada Sanchez, 29, was driving a Jeep Cherokee with Joanne Figueroa, 34, and two children as his passengers.
They were traveling north on Shafter Avenue, approaching Burbank Street, at the time. A Dodge Ram going east on Burbank then ran a stop sign at the intersection.
Girl, 1, Killed in Wreck
In the process, the pickup slammed into the left side of the Jeep. The impact pushed the Cherokee into an almond orchard, where it hit two power poles and an almond tree.
The Jeep rolled onto its left side and the Ram struck a stop sign in the area. The Kern Golden Empire and Bakersfield Now wrote that the accident occurred on July 23 at around 4:30 p.m.
Jesus Tejada Sanchez, Joanne Figueroa, the children and the two people in the truck sustained moderate or major injuries in the crash. CHP described the juveniles as a 1-year-old girl and a 6-year-old.
Paramedics rushed all the patients to the Kern Medical, where the 1-year-old died. Meanwhile, officers determined that the driver of the pickup was under the influence of alcohol when he hit the other car.
They soon arrested him for DUI. The crash is still under investigation
