National City Man, 79, Dies in Hospital
EL CAJON, Calif. (Jan. 22, 2025) – Jesus Toriz, 79, from National City, died at the hospital Friday nearly three weeks after being involved in a collision on the Interstate 8 Freeway in El Cajon.
The multi-vehicle traffic accident occurred around 2:20 p.m. on Dec. 28th, according to the San Diego Medical Examiner press release.
According to preliminary reports, the elderly man was driving a Honda SUV eastbound on the freeway when he stopped his vehicle due to traffic conditions. Meanwhile, a driver in a Jeep SUV, traveling behind the Honda, collided with a Volkswagen sedan. The VW reportedly rear-ended Honda and the 79-year-old driver identified as Jesus Toriz suffered major injuries.
Law enforcement and emergency personnel were quickly dispatched to the scene after 911 was called. Paramedics transported the decedent to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for multiple injuries. Despite efforts to stabilize his condition, the man’s health deteriorated, and he was admitted to the facility for further care.
Sadly, after nearly three weeks of medical treatment, the 79-year-old man was pronounced dead on January 17, 2025.
The incident remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
