Delhi Fatal Wrong-Way DUI Crash Monday on Highway 99

Delhi Fatal Wrong-Way DUI Crash Monday on Highway 991 Dead, 2 Injured, Man Arrested

DELHI (June 28, 2017)- According to the Merced Sun-Star, a deadly wrong-way DUI crash was reported Monday evening on Highway 99 resulting in the death of a man and injuries to three others.

The article read that the crash occurred at around 11:35 p.m. involving three vehicles including a 2016 Toyota Camry, a 2017 Toyota Corolla, and a 2012 Honda Civic.

Authorities reported that the driver of the 2016 Toyota Camry identified as Evan Garcia, 35, of Delhi, had been accompanied by passenger Jimmy Guerrero, 31, of Delhi. Garcia had been headed northbound within the southbound lanes of Highway 99 before colliding head-on with the 2017 Toyota Corolla driven by Kou Xiong, 30, of Winton.

Garcia’s vehicle continued on and ultimately slammed into the Honda Civic driven by Guillermo Benitez, 33, of Livingston, causing Garcia’s vehicle to catch fire.

As a result of the collision, passenger Jimmy Guerrero sadly did not survive the wreck as California Highway Patrol respondents were unable to remove Guerrero from the vehicle as the fire quickly spread trapping him inside.

Kou Xiong sustained serious internal injuries after the vehicle overturned following impact. She was rushed to Doctor Med Center located in the city of Modesto where she remained as of Tuesday evening.

Guillermo Benitez was also hurt but to a minor degree. He received treatment at the scene. It remains unclear whether or not he elected to be transported to a hospital.

Meanwhile, Evan Garcia was seriously injured as well and was fortunately removed from the burning vehicle by CHP officials. He was rushed to Doctors Medical Center and was last said to have been in poor condition.

It was determined Garcia was over the limit and under the influence, per CHP Officer Eric Zuniga. Zuniga confirmed that Garcia would be arrested pending his release from the hospital.
