Jiuan Aylward, 81, Fatal Pedestrian Accident Canal Street and Vista Del Playa Ave in Orange
ORANGE, California (June 24, 2017) — Jiuan Aylward, 81, of Orange was struck by a truck Friday morning in a fatal crash at North Canal Street and East Vista Del Playa Avenue, according to a report by the Orange County Sheriff Coroner.
The crash took place about 4:58 a.m. yesterday across the street from the Village at Orange. The woman was attempting to cross the small two-lane street, but there is not stop signs or traffic lights and the intersection has no marked crosswalk. It may have been difficult for the truck to see the woman. The truck driver who struck the victim stopped, called 911 and remained with her at the scene.
Paramedics were sent to the scene and they transported the victim by ambulance to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana. She died of her injuries at 5:09 p.m. the same day.
The Orange Police Department is heading up an investigation into the fatality to determine fault. While the pedestrian did not do anything illegal when crossing at this location, it may have been difficult for the driver to see her as she crossed if it were still dark outside. Police will look into the speed the driver was going when he struck the pedestrian. This is a factor that police will consider. The small, two-lane roadway was likely a low speed limit as it’s at the entrance of a residential area and near a shopping mall where pedestrians are expected to be crossing. Also, some commercial truck drivers are involved in collisions due to long work hours and fatigue.
It’s advisable that a person who is hurt in a pedestrian accident or the surviving family members of a loved one killed in this type of collision, seek and obtain legal advice to ensure their rights are protected.
