Man Struck and Killed at Fresno Intersection: West Avenue and Shields Avenue
FRESNO, Calif. (March 3, 2020) – Joe Mendiola, 67, of Fresno, was struck and killed Monday night at West and Shields avenues in Fresno.
A victim was reportedly crossing the roadway when he was struck by a car.
Police believe the man was jaywalking when he was struck about 7 p.m. at the Fresno intersection.
Paramedics transported the injured man to Community Regional Medical Center where he was treated for major injuries, but died a short time later.
The woman driving the car stopped and cooperated with police. There were children in the vehicle, but they were uninjured.
The driver told police that her “heart was broken,” but she called 911 and she waited for police as required under California law.
Police did not arrest the woman and it did not appear that there were any citations either. Liability will be determined after a full investigation is completed.
