Navy Sailor Killed in Solo Crash; 4 Injured
JACUMBA HOT SPRINGS, Calif. (June 6, 2022) — John Anthony Deltoro, 29, of Augusta, Georgia, is identified as the Navy sailor who died Friday morning when a van crashed on the I-8 Freeway near Jacumba Hot Springs.
John Deltoro joined the United States Navy in 2012 and was an Electronics Technician 2nd Class, Navy officials said.
The Navy sailor was traveling in a Chevrolet Express van with four others assigned to West Coast-based Naval Special Warfare units. They were returning to San Diego after a training session at Camp Billy Machen located in Imperial County.
The collision occurred just before 10 a.m. when their van went off the Interstate 8 Freeway near Carrizo Gorge Road, the California Highway Patrol said. The vehicle crashed down a down a dirt embankment and hit a large boulder, police said.
John Deltoro died in the crash and two other sailors were critically injured. The other two were in stable condition as of Saturday, Navy officials said.
Additionally, CHP officials say alcohol and/or drugs are not factors in the collision.
Finally, the investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
