Motorcyclist Killed in Crash on Interstate 5 in Oceanside

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (Dec. 29, 2025) — John Stewart McCarthy, 57, of San Diego, was killed in a motorcycle crash late Dec. 18 on southbound Interstate 5 near the Aliso Creek Rest Area, authorities said.

McCarthy was riding a motorcycle shortly after 10:20 p.m. when, for reasons still under investigation, he collided with the rear of a pickup truck, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Oceanside office. After the initial impact, the motorcycle veered left and struck the center divider.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene following multiple 911 calls. Paramedics attempted lifesaving measures, but McCarthy was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 10:45 p.m., officials said.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the torso. The manner of death was ruled an accident, and no contributing conditions were identified.

No other injuries were reported. The crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
