Man Riding Electric Bicycle Killed in Sonora Car Accident
SONORA, Calif. (Sept. 10, 2018) — John Richard Kikugawa, 67, was killed in a car accident while riding his electric bicycle on Highway 49, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash took place Saturday night near Old Sonora Columbia Road. Police say Kikugawa was riding his bicycle southbound on Highway 49 on the right edge of the roadway when he allegedly turned left towards Old Columbia Road. He was struck from behind by a 2006 Buick and thrown off the bicycle. Kikugawa, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from the bike and died at the scene.
Shawn Williams, 44, of Sonora, told police that he tried to avoid hitting the bicycle when he saw it turn in front of him, but could not avoid the impact. He stopped and cooperated with the investigation.
