Man Struck by Car While Riding on Scooter in Balboa Park Area
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Sept. 20, 2021) — Johnathan Sepulveda, 34, of San Diego, died Saturday night in an electric scooter accident on Pershing Drive in the Balboa Park area.
The deadly crash happened just before 11 p.m. on Sept. 18th, according to the San Diego Medical Examiner.
A 17-year-old girl reportedly struck the San Diego man from behind when she veered into the bike lane, the report said. She was traveling northeast on Pershing Drive and he was riding his scooter in the bicycle lane. “The decedent was projected, and his electrical scooter was caught underneath the vehicle,” the coroner said.
He was reportedly riding just a few feet behind his sister and brother-in-law, authorities said.
Johnathan Sepulveda suffered major injuries> Sadly, he died at the scene before paramedics could transport him to a hospital.
The area where the accident took place is known for deadly collisions. It is heavily traveled by motorists because it connects downtown and North Park. However, there is a plan by the city to install a protected, two-way bicycle path as well as a sidewalk on the roadway, but it was recently delayed due to design disagreements.
