Wine Director at Chez Panisse Restaurant Killed in Crash
OAKLAND, Calif. (June 3, 2022) – Jonathan Waters, 60, of Berkeley, died Saturday morning following a bicycle accident the night before on Shattuck Avenue and 55th Street in Oakland.
The Oakland bicycle accident occurred at 10:30 p.m. on May 27th at the intersection in the City’s Bushrod neighborhood, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Police say Jonathan Waters was riding his bicycle near the intersection when an 18-year-old Alamo resident struck him due to unknown circumstances.
Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the cyclist to the hospital, but he died Saturday, May 28th.
Meanwhile, the teenage driver stopped and cooperated with authorities and the investigation.
It’s unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
Oakland police are heading up the Oakland crash investigation.
Jonathan Waters worked at Chez Paniesse at 1517 Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley since 1984 and became wine director in 1989, according to Wine & Spirits magazine. He was roughly three miles from the restaurant on the same road when the crash occurred.
