Driver Runs Red Light Causing Crash
MERCED (June 22, 2017)- Per the Merced Sun-Star, a major injury crash was reported over the weekend on Saturday, June 17, leaving two with serious injuries at the intersection of G Street and Alexander Avenue.
Authorities responded to the collision at around 7:50 p.m. between a Ford Explorer police vehicle and a 1998 Honda Civic.
The driver of the Civic, Jonathon Munguia, 19, of Merced, had been traveling westbound on Alexander before colliding at the intersection with sheriffs deputy, Thomas Miller, who had been headed southbound on C Street.
Per the Merced Sun-Star, one of the driver blew through a red light and triggered the collision which is currently under investigation.
Jonathon Munguia and a 17-year-old unidentified passenger were both badly injured and rushed to a hospital for treatment. Both injured teens were said to have been in critical condition but stable as of Monday afternoon.
Thomas Miller suffered minor aches and pains and was brought to a hospital and released later Saturday evening.
Police officials are hoping to strip surveillance footage which will allow them to conclude which driver triggered the wreck.
