Jose Hernandez, 27, Injured in Santa Maria DUI Hit-and-Run Crash
SANTA MARIA, CA (June 30, 2021) – Jose Hernandez was injured after a DUI hit-and-run crash on Highway 101 in Santa Maria.
The California Highway Patrol identified the 27-year-old Santa Maria man as the victim of the wreck which occurred on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident happened when Jose Hernandez was driving a 2002 Chevy Silverado in the middle lane of southbound Highway 101 in Santa Maria.
At the same time, a 2002 Nissan Altima was traveling at a high rate of speed in the left-hand lane. CHP said the Nissan passed the Chevrolet and veered across all three lanes to the right.
The Altima drove onto the right shoulder and then made a hard turning movement to the left. The car went back across the three lanes of Highway 101 and slammed into the center divider wall.
Speeding Drunk Driver Hits Another Car on Highway 101
The front bumper of the Nissan ended up thrown in the middle lane into the path of the Silverado. The sedan came to a rest in the farthest right-hand lane.
Jose Hernandez veered into right-hand lane to avoid hitting the bumper and collided with the front end of the Nissan. His pickup truck ultimately rolled over, just south of the Main Street on-ramp.
The Santa Maria Times and Noozhawk wrote that the accident took place on June 29 shortly before 3 p.m. Jose Hernandez sustained minor injuries as a result of the Santa Maria crash.
Paramedics took him to the Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment. Meanwhile, the male driver of the Nissan abandoned the vehicle and ran away.
CHP located him on Bradley Road and determined that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time. They soon arrested him on suspicion of DUI and hit-and-run.
Officers forced the southbound on-ramp at Main Street to shut down for a time following the wreck. The DUI hit-and-run collision is still under investigation.
