Richmond Couple Killed in Crash on 5 Freeway in Carlsbad
CARLSBAD, Calif. (Jan. 17, 2024) — Jose Lozano, and his wife, Luz Duran Rios, were both killed early Saturday in an alleged DUI crash on the southbound Interstate 5 Freeway, north of Palomar Airport Road near Carlsbad.
The deadly crash involving three vehicles occurred at around 3:50 a.m. on Jan. 13th, according to a California Highway Patrol report.
The Richmond couple was driving to to the airport in Tijuana to fly to Cabo San Lucus for a vacation to celebrate her 56th birthday, according to an article by NBC San Diego.
Sadly, the couple never made it to their destination because they were involved in a collision with a suspected drunk driver.
Woman Arrested on DUI Charges after Fatal Crash
Angela Hays, 28, of Corona, was traveling southbound in a gray Hyundai allegedly set off the collision when she crashed into a green Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV driven by Jose Lozano, NBC reports. The Jeep reportedly overturned and was struck a second time by a Nissan Altima in the HOV lane, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Jose Lozano was gravely injured and transported by ambulance to a hospital where he later died, but his wife Luz Duran Rios died at the scene.

The Nissan driver was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
Angela Hays did not report any injuries, but she was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter. Police booked at the Vista Detention Facility.
