Jose Perez-Hernandez, 42, Seriously injured in San Luis County Caltrans Crash

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, CA (September 10, 2022) – A crash left Caltrans worker Jose Perez-Hernandez seriously injured on Highway 101 in San Luis Obispo County.

The California Highway Patrol identified the 42-year-old man as the victim of the collision which occurred on Friday afternoon.

The incident happened when Jose Perez-Hernandez was standing on the right shoulder of Highway 101 in front of the Caltrans truck. The vehicle was parked in the area as protection for the work crew.

Man Hit by Car

At the same time, a 2006 GMC Sierra was going south in the San Luis Obispo County roadway. The driver of the car, Alexander Ayala, drifted right onto the shoulder for an unknown reason.

CHP said the 29-year-old Santa Maria man then sideswiped the equipment and hit the worker. The Tribune and Noozhawk wrote that the accident at around 1:30 p.m. near Tefft Street.

Jose Perez-Hernandez sustained serious injuries as a result of the Caltrans crash. Paramedics rushed the patient to the Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Meanwhile, officers forced one lane of Highway 101 to shut down for several hours following the incident. The cause of the wreck is still under investigation.
