Jose Roberto Tafoya-Flores, 41, ID’d as Hit-and-Run DUI Suspect in Desert Hot Springs Fatal Crash
DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA (September 13, 2021) – Authorities detained Jose Tafoya-Flores after a DUI hit-and-run crash in Desert Hot Springs.
The California Highway Patrol located the 41-year-old man intoxicated following the fatal collision which occurred on Saturday.
The incident began when Isaiah Ortega-Dage was riding as a passenger in a northbound vehicle on Palm Drive, north of Varner Road.
For an unknown reason, the female driver stopped their car between the right lane and the shoulder. The 23-year-old Indio man exited, walked around to the driver’s side and stood in the right lane.

At the same time, Jose Roberto Tafoya-Flores was driving a Nissan pickup truck along the Desert Hot Springs road. He approached the stopped vehicle and then struck the pedestrian.
CHP said Isaiah Ortega-Dage died at the scene. The Desert Sun and My News LA wrote that the accident took place on September 11 shortly after 12 a.m.
Meanwhile, CHP affirmed that Jose Tafoya-Flores did not stop to render aid to the victim and fled the area. They found him at Two Bunch Palms Trail and Palm Drive an hour after.
Officers soon arrested Jose Tafoya-Flores on suspicion of hit-and-run as well as other alleged charges such as DUI. They held him at the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio in lieu of a $75,000 bail.
The Desert Hot Springs DUI hit-and-run crash is still under investigation.
