Driver Killed in Crash with Motorcycle Rider on Highway 99
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (May 7, 2021) — Jose Vazquez Maciel, 42, died two days after a motorcycle rider crashed through his windshield on Highway 99 in South Sacramento.
The Stockton man was driving a Toyota Corolla southbound on Highway 99 when the collision happened about 12:10 a.m. on Saturday, April 25th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Prior to the collision, a 43-year-old Modesto man riding a Harley Davidson Road King was also heading southbound on Highway 99. As he passed Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, one of his saddle bags fell off his motorcycle, Fox 40 News reports.
The motorcyclist stopped his bike in the center median, but an oncoming car struck the bag. The contents were thrown across the highway.
Next, the motorcyclist stepped onto the roadway to retrieve his belongings. That’s when he was hit by a Toyota Corolla driven by Jose Vazquez Maciel. The pedestrian crashed through the car’s windshield and his helmet struck the driver’s face.
Meanwhile, a crash ensued behind the Toyota between another car and an SUV, the CHP said. Paramedics responded and rushed both the motorcycle rider and Jose Vazquez Maciel to the hospital. The two men suffered major injuries in the collision. Additionally, the drivers of the two other vehicles suffered minor injuries.
Two days after the collision, the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office confirmed the death of Jose Vazquez Maciel.
Investigators are working to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor.
