SAN JACINTO, California (October 6, 2016) — Joseph Frias, 59, was riding a motorized wheelchair when he was struck and killed Wednesday afternoon by a driver on San Jacinto Avenue, just north of Midway Street, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
The fatal crash took place about 4:05 p.m. yesterday. The San Jacinto Police Department stated Frias was attempting to cross San Jacinto Avenue in his motorized wheelchair outside of a marked crosswalk. A driver who was heading northbound on San Jacinto Avenue struck him, but stopped and remained at the scene to speak with authorities.
Paramedics responded and transported Frias to a hospital, but he later died of his injuries there.
Police closed down the roadway for roughly three hours to investigate the cause of the crash.
The San Jacinto Police Department is asking witnesses to contact Deputy Cortez at 951-654-2702.
