SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, California (May 7, 2017) — Joseph McCarty, 21, of San Juan Capistrano has died and his passenger was injured early Saturday morning when his car crashed into a power pole and overturned on Avenida Vaquero at Camino de los Mares, according to the Orange County Sheriff Coroner.
The fatal collision took place about 12:47 a.m. and it was a solo crash. McCarty was driving a Honda Accord with a single passenger at the time of the crash. Paramedics responded and he was pronounced dead at the scene, but his passenger was transported to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.
The crash remains under investigation by police to determine whether alcohol, drugs or speed were factors. Police say at least one witness heard the sound of a revving engine prior to the collision.
