Luis Duarte Ibarra, 51, Arrested on Felony Hit-and-run Charges
SANTA ANA, Calif. (April 29, 2024) — Joseph Purnell Alton, 29, of Buena Park, died in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident early Thursday at First and Sullivan streets.
The next day at 4:45 a.m., police arrested 51-year-old Luis Duarte Ibarra of Santa Ana in Garden Grove on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, but other charges may be pending. The suspect’s vehicle was also taken for evidence.
Police responded to the crash scene at First Street and Sullivan Street at around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 25th and located the unresponsive male pedestrian in the roadway, according to the Santa Ana Police Department.
The Orange County Fire Authority sent paramedics to help the injured young man later identified as Joseph Purnell Alton, but he died at the scene.
Investigators working on the case believe the driver was traveling westbound on First Street when he allegedly struck the pedestrian who was standing in the roadway, according to the Orange County Register. The suspect failed to stop and kept driving westbound on First Street, police said.
The Santa Ana Police Department’s Traffic Collision Investigation Unit is working on the case.
