Pilot Josh Reikes Survives Double Fatal Plane Crash in San Diego
SAN DIEGO (December 19, 2017) – The pilot who survived the plane crash last December 9, Saturday, has been identified as Josh Reikes, of Torrance.
According to the Daily Breeze, Reikes was the operator of the single-engine Beech B36 Bonanza plane that crashed into a home in Clairemont neighborhood, a few miles from the airport.
Reports indicated that an unspecified mechanical problem occurred prior to the tragic incident. As per the article, Reikes took off from Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in San Diego just before 5 p.m. and quickly reported catastrophic engine failure.
The extent of injuries sustained by Reikes in the crash was not disclosed, but medical personnel at least mentioned that he is still recovering from injuries.
Investigators learned that Reikes tried to land the 1995 Beechcraft Bonanza in a school field, but missed and crashed into a house.
His two passengers died in the accident. They have been identified as 46-year-old Michael Zareski, and 50-year-old Robert Stelling.
Reikes began working at Sun Country Airlines in October. Before being hired by Sun Country, he worked at Compass Airlines for nearly two years.
At this time, detectives are still working on determining the precise cause of the plane crash. It was not immediately disclosed if the involved plane’s listed owner, Altitude Aviation Inc. in Hermosa Beach, California, is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
