1 Killed, 4 Injured in Head-On Crash on Highway 198
TULARE COUNTY (September 30, 2019) – Authorities arrested the alleged DUI driver in a crash that killed one person and injured others on Highway 198 Sunday.
California Highway Patrol said 37-year-old Joshua Young was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident on September 29 near Lake Kaweah.
According to The Fresno Bee, the incident began when Young driving a 2001 Mercedes C200 west on Highway 198 attempted to pass a car ahead of him.
The Visalia man then pulled into the eastbound lane traveling at approximately 80 mph and struck a 2011 GMC Yukon head-on. The accident took place at around 5:20 p.m., west of Road 248.
Suspected Drunk Driver Joshua Young, 37, Arrested
CHP affirmed that the driver of the GMC, 56-year-old Tulare resident Keely Stidham, and three other occupants suffered minor injuries in the collision. Two of the victims were described as a 6-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy.
A passenger in the Mercedes, a 61-year-old Visalia woman, died as a result of the wreck. The coroner’s office has not released her name pending notification of family.
Young sustained major injuries upon impact. Paramedics took all five patients to Kaweah Delta Medical Center in Visalia for treatment
Meanwhile, officers arrested Young on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and drunken driving with a blood-alcohol level of more than .20 causing injury, both felonies. They booked him into the Tulare County jail with a bail set at $100,000.
