JULIAN, Calif. (May 14, 2018) — Three people were killed Thursday when the small plane they were riding in crashed into Volcan Mountain, just north of Julian, according to the Associated Press.
The incident took place during high winds in the area and the crash sparked a wildfire that burned roughly 12 acres. Rescue workers were unable to reach the wreckage until Sunday when they found the remains of the victims. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, they believe the plane was from the Gillespie Field in El Cajon, but this has not been confirmed. A witness to the crash called 911 to report it on Thursday night.
The incident remains under investigation.
