CHICO (March 27, 2019) – Two drivers were injured after a fatal traffic collision along Highway 99 on Monday afternoon, March 25.

The victims have been identified as 20-year-old Kaitlin Rist and 41-year-old Leicia Wright. Rist is from Oroville while Wright is a resident of Red Bluff.

California Highway Patrol said a 2009 Honda Civic was going north on Highway 99 when its driver apparently lost control of his car.

The Honda then entered the oncoming southbound lane and collided with a 2001 Toyota 4Runner driven by Rist.

Juan Vasquez-Lopez, 20, Killed in Chico Car Crash

The Toyota was ultimately hit by Wright who was driving a 2017 Dodge pickup behind Rist. The accident took place at about 12:30 p.m. in the area of Gaia Way.

CHP affirmed that both Rist and Wright were transported to Enloe Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries.

The motorist in the Civic was pronounced dead at the scene. Butte County Coroner’s Office identified him as 20-year-old Juan Vasquez-Lopez, of Atwater.

Both northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 99 were forced to close following the wreck. Authorities are still investigating the incident.

Personal Injury Lawyer

A forensic examination of the Honda Civic, as well as photos that were taken of the scene, will help investigators determine the cause of the crash. Authorities will thoroughly look into how fast the driver was going, whether or not alcohol or drugs played a role, whether or not there was any mechanical issue with the vehicle, and whether or not the driver involved was distracted or reckless at the time. The investigation will also consist of looking at measurements of evidence left by all three cars involved as point of impact, their final resting positions, skid marks, and gouge marks.

Pending the result and findings of the investigation, Ms. Kaitlin Rist and Ms. Leicia Wright may have the right to pursue a personal injury lawsuit, seeking a compensation for all the hospital bills, future medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
