SAN DIEGO, Calif. (May 31, 2023) — Karen Lee Cooper, 72, of La Jolla, died after bags of cement fell from an overturned truck on the 805 Freeway onto the windshield of an SUV below the overpass on State Route 52.
The deadly accident occurred around 1 p.m. on Friday, May 26th, in Clairemont, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The white Chevrolet pickup truck hauling a one-ton stake bed overturned on the southbound side of the freeway, above state Route 52, the California Highway Patrol said.
When the truck overturned, several bags of cement and other materials fell out and landed on top of the gray Mercedes SUV and blocked the eastbound lanes of the roadway, the CHP said. The woman was seated on the passenger side of the SUV and died on scene. There were no other injuries reported.
Authorities had to closed down the southbound I-805 connector to eastbound SR-52.
Investigators are working on the case to determine liability for the collision.
