Karen Schwamb Faces 3 Murder Charges for Alleged DUI Fatal Crash on Highway 70

John Lowe, 46, Crystal Smith, 40, Thomas Fridrich, 61, Killed by Drunk Driver

Karen Yvonne SchwambPLUMAS COUNTY (February 7, 2018)-  Karen Yvonne Schwamb, 48, of Twain is facing murder charges following a deadly head-on DUI crash that left three motorists dead Monday on Highway 70 in the Feather River Canyon.

Schwamb is being charged with three counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Crystal Smith, 40, John Lowe, 46, both of Paradise, and Thomas Fridrich, 61. She is also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs as well as causing injuries while having a prior DUI conviction.

She is being held at a Plumas County jail in lieu of a $3 million bond and is facing 48 years to life in prison.

The fatal crash was reported at 2:00 p.m. Police say Schwamb’s Subaru Outback SUV crossed over the double yellow lines to pass another vehicle and drove directly into the path of a pickup truck driven by Fridrich. Her vehicle then collided into a motorcycle carrying Lowe and his passenger, Smith. She was reportedly traveling at speeds upwards of 80 mph. Several of the vehicles overturned in the collision.

Schwamb suffered serious injuries herself, but her passenger, James Timberlake, 58, of Twain, had minor injuries. They were both taken to a hospital.

Johnson Attorneys Group offers our condolences to the family members and all friends of the victim involved in this devastating tragedy.

Wrongful Death Lawyer

The suspect responsible for driving under the influence, Karen Schwamb, is facing murder charges for the deaths of these three innocent people and will likely spend the rest of her life in jail for this horrible crime.

If a negligent driver caused a collision that left you with injuries or the loss of a loved one, you may have grounds for a personal injury or wrongful death claim.

It’s important to note, however, that it’s quite common for insurance companies to try and avoid paying out a claim even when they know their insured is responsible. They may also make an offer to settle for far less than the full amount owed. This is unacceptable.

The first thing you should do is contact an attorney. Without the representation of a lawyer, insurance companies might make contact with you directly, and since they are trained to protect their best interests, this could mean a loss of rights on your behalf, especially if you unknowingly sign something that they didn't completely explain to you. Handling a personal injury claim by yourself is very difficult. You will deal directly with the insurance adjuster who is often trained to obtain the information they are not entitled to use. This information can negatively impact and de-value your case. Once your case is damaged, it is very difficult to repair it and usually costs you thousands of dollars less in a settlement.
