Pedestrian Killed; Hit-and-run Suspect, Jose Cruz Arrested
CARLSBAD, Calif. (Sept. 12, 2024) — Karla Leyva, 23, died in a crash Tuesday on Las Palmas Drive in Carlsbad after a suspected DUI driver struck her standing next to her parked car.
The deadly crash occurred at 12:35 a.m. on Sept. 10th, near Camino Vida Roble, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Officials say the 23-year-old Carlsbad woman had just exited her parked car on Las Palmas Drive when a driver in a Volkswagen Jetta sedan struck her and three vehicles.
The suspect, identified as Jose Manuel Zambrano Cruz, 26, of Carlsbad, fled the scene and the young woman died following the crash. She was later identified as Karla Leyva.
Investigators located the suspect a short time later and he is facing several charges including DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.
