Bicyclist Killed in Highway 1 Car Accident Near Davenport
DAVENPORT, Calif. (May 24, 2019) – Kevin Stephen Cook, 66, was struck and killed Thursday night while riding his bicycle on Highway 1.
The crash was reported about 9:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 23rd, just north of Davenport in Santa Cruz County. The bicycle rider was a citizen of the United Kingdom who was visiting California, according to East Bay Times. Cook was riding his bicycle in a southbound direction when the crash occurred.
A 61-year-old Santa Cruz woman driving a Toyota Prius struck the victim as she also drove southbound. The man was ejected from his bike and thrown down into opposing traffic where other vehicles struck him.
The California Highway Patrol responded to the crash scene and diverted traffic onto Cement Plant Road. The bicyclist suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The driver stopped and cooperated with police investigating the crash. There were no arrests or citations given out at this time.
Once the investigation was completed, the highway reopened to traffic about 1:26 a.m. on Friday morning.
