Fatal Boating Accident on Colorado River; 3 Dead; 1 Missing, 9 Hospitalized
CALIFORNIA, (Sept. 4, 2018) — Kirra Drury, 23, of Ventura, is the third missing person to be located following a boating tragedy on the Colorado River over Labor Day weekend.
Her friend, Raegan Heitzig, also from Ventura, remains missing.
Brian Grabowski, 50, of Tulare, and Christi Lewis, 51, of California, were also killed in the head-on collision between two boats Saturday night on the Colorado River at the California-Arizona border. They were all located by search teams in the days following the crash.
The four people went missing after Saturday’s collision where 16 boaters were thrown in the water. Both boats sank after the crash. The body of Lewis was found on Monday and Grabowski was found on Tuesday.
The head-on collision occurred about 8 p.m. on Saturday night when the two boats hit each at speeds estimated to be 50 mph. The crash took place between Pirates Cove and the Topock Marina near Moabi Regional Park on a stretch of the Colorado River north of Lake Havasu. One of the boats was carrying 10 people and the other had six aboard when the crash took place. All 16 people were thrown into the water and none were wearing life jackets.
Nine other people were injured in the collision including two who were airlifted to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas, police said. Seven people were transported by ambulance and treated for less serious injuries, officials said.
Among the injured was Jordon Heitzig whose sister Raegan remains missing. Joron fractured her spine at the top of her neck and has burns from the boat impact, according to her family’s Go Fund Me page. The sisters were aboard the boat with her uncle Brian Grabowski who perished in the crash. Other relatives aboard the boat were also hurt.
