Kurt Jensen, 40; and Rafael Esquivel, 60, Injured in Mendocino County Crash on Highway 20
MENDOCINO COUNTY, CA (March 28, 2022) – A car crash seriously injured Kurt Jensen and Rafael Esquivel on Highway 20 in Mendocino County.
The California Highway Patrol said the accident took place on Monday afternoon. Officers reported the wreck at about 5:28 p.m. near Lake Mendocino.
The incident began when 49-year-old Kurt Jensen, of Clearlake, was driving a black 2019 Ford Explorer west on Highway 20 in Mendocino County.
At the same time, a blue 2003 Mini Cooper was going east. The driver of the Mini Cooper, 60-year-old Rafael Esquivel, drove through standing water.
The Ukiah man lost traction, spun and veered into the westbound lane. In the process, he collided with a Toyota Tacoma traveling in front of the Ford.
1 Killed in Wreck
The Lassen County News and KYMKEMP wrote that both cars went out of control as a result of the collision. In the process, the Mini Cooper slammed into the Explorer east of Potter Valley Road.
Kurt Jensen sustained moderate injuries following the crash while Rafael Esquivel survived with major injuries. Paramedics soon took them to a hospital for treatment.
A 49-year-old Ukiah woman riding as a passenger in the Mini Cooper died at the scene. The motorist in the Tacoma, 66-year-old Michael Schmuckley, of Portland, Oregon, ended up unharmed.
Meanwhile, CHP added that the roadway was wet when the wreck happened due to possible rain. The Mendocino County crash is still under investigation.
