Alleged Drunken Driver in Custody in Death of Man in Wheelchair
LONG BEACH, Calif. (March 29, 2019) – Kyle McNeley has been identified as the pedestrian in a wheelchair who was killed in a collision Thursday night on Bellflower Boulevard.
The driver who struck McNeley, Jesus Jorge Arias, 37, of Lakewood, was arrested following the crash.
McNeley was attempting to cross Bellflower Boulevard in a crosswalk at the time of his death.
The suspect reportedly fled the scene of the crash Thursday night, but later turned returned. He turned himself in to police who were at the scene investigating the collision.
Arias was arrested and faces charges of DUI and hit-and-run, the Long Beach Police Department reported. His bail was set at $100,000.
The Long Beach Police Department is heading up the investigation.
The suspect’s 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee was reportedly heading northbound when he allegedly struck the victim in the roadway about 8:05 p.m., just north of Harvey Way. The victim was transported to a hospital where he later died of his injuries.
