LA QUINTA, California (May 22, 2015) — Marty Pasetta, 82, of La Quinta was hit by a suspected drunken driver and killed Thursday night as he exited the vehicle in the 49000 block of Via Conquistador, according to a press release by the Riverside County Sheriff Coroner.
About 9:22 p.m., La Quinta Police responded to the crash involving a suspected DUI driver identified as Keith Stewart, 75, of La Quinta. Stewart had stopped the vehicle and was letting out his passengers including Pasetta from the car, but he left the transmission engage as he also stepped out and the car struck Pasetta and a second passenger.
Pasetta died of his injuries at the scene, but the second passenger was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs for treatment of undisclosed injuries.
Police arrested Stewart on suspicion of DUI and he was booked into the Riverside County Jail in Indio, California.
“This is one of the many types of tragedies that can happen when a person chooses to drive drunk,” said Attorney James Johnson. “My condolences go out to the victim’s family. Hopefully the person who was injured has a complete recovery.”
