Drunk Driving, Speeding Over Holiday Weekend Are a Deadly Mix

What makes Labor Day weekend the deadliest week of the year?

There are certainly multiple factors that contribute to the high rate of crash fatalities over this busy holiday.

Let’s start with the most obvious one. Most people would probably say it’s drunk driving, and they wouldn’t be wrong. That’s because DUI collisions account for roughly a third of all fatal traffic collisions and even more on holiday weekends.

Others might argue that speeding contributes to more crash fatalities. It’s true that speed can increase the risk of death in a crash. Speeding also accounts for about a third of all fatal collisions.

Yet there is one factor that is even higher than either one of these.

And most people are probably guilty of it. Drowsy driving represents roughly 37 percent of all traffic accidents. It was a factor in nearly 700 fatalities nationwide in 2022.

Still, while all these actions increase road fatalities, both drivers and passengers are responsible for the biggest cause of crash fatalities.

Believe it or not, it’s simply not wearing your seatbelt.

Indeed, some 45% of drivers and 51% of front seat passengers died in collisions because they didn’t buckle up. People who don’t wear a seatbelt are up to 8 times more likely to die in a collision than people who wear theirs.

So if you put all these factors together, and add more people expected to travel for Labor Day, you’ve got the reason why this week is the deadliest of the year.
