The accident involving two unknown vehicles was reported at 12:13 p.m. between Allan Street and Ardenwood Way.
A statement released by the Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department said an occupant was extricated after being pinned in one of the cars involved.
That person was seriously injured and was transported to Inland Valley Medical Center along with two other passengers who reportedly sustained moderate injuries in the crash.
Mendez later died of his injuries at the hospital at 12:43 p.m., the article added.
Two eastbound lanes on Highway 74 were forced to shut down until 6 p.m.
Meanwhile, the cause of the incident remains under investigation.
