LAPD Sergeant Shiou Deng Killed While Aiding Crash Victims on 405 Freeway

Two Killed, One Injured in Crash on Freeway
LOS ANGELES, June 24, 2025 — LAPD Sergeant Shiou Deng, 53, was tragically killed early Monday morning while assisting at the scene of a traffic collision on the southbound 405 Freeway in Brentwood.
The crash occurred around 2 a.m. on June 23rd, just north of Moraga Drive. According to LAPD officials, Deng came upon what appeared to be a two-vehicle crash while driving his patrol SUV. He stopped to help, activated his vehicle’s rear lights to alert traffic, and exited to check on those involved.
Moments later, Deng was struck by another passing vehicle. He was rushed to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center but did not survive.
A man believed to be in his 30s, involved in the original crash, was pronounced dead at the scene. A third person was transported to the hospital with injuries of unknown severity. Their names have not yet been released.
The incident shut down the southbound lanes of the 405 Freeway through the morning rush hour, with traffic diverted at the 101 Freeway. Lanes reopened around 12:17 p.m.
Sergeant Deng had served with the LAPD for over 26 years, including 17 years in the department’s Mental Evaluation Unit. He was remembered by Chief Jim McDonnell as “a true hero” and “exceptionally caring.”
Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom both issued statements honoring Deng’s service and sacrifice. Deng is survived by his wife and parents.
A solemn procession of officers escorted his body from Westwood to the Medical Examiner’s office later that morning.
